Our Story
A Brasserie for York
The Coppergate opened in 2018 under chef-patron Richard Ainsworth, who spent two decades in Michelin-starred kitchens before returning to his native York to open a restaurant that felt genuinely part of the city's fabric.
The room is set within a restored medieval merchants' hall — exposed stone, oak beams and copper accents — and the food follows the same principle: honest craft with occasional flourish. Our Sunday lunch has become something of a York institution.
"I want every guest to feel they've eaten something genuinely memorable — not just technically impressive."
